Analysis Of Brave New World English Literature Essay

Analysis Of Brave New World English Literature Essay Imagine a futuristic society where natural birth is obsolete and children are decanted from test tubes. A society based on a prejudiced and strict caste system: where Alphas rule and Epsilons are purposely given alcohol during their gestation period to inhibit their growth and intelligence. Where sexual promiscuity is accepted and encouraged, while those who practice monogamy and have deeps feelings for only one individual are ostracized. As Lenina aptly summarizes, everybody belongs to every one else and no one belongs to themselves (Huxley, 121). This horrifying dystopia is the setting of Aldous Huxleys new age novel, Brave New World, where the main protagonists, Bernard Marx and John the Savage, defy social norm for a chance of freedom. Published in 1932, Huxleys novel satirizes issues not only present in the 30s but in todays modern society as well. Inequality among people and technologys hold on the masses are brought to light within the novel. However comical some sections seem to be at first, Huxleys original purpose was to draw light in how easy governments could control their the masses through psychological means while the public themselves are left ignorant or fully accept it just as in Brave New World. Although the people of this controlled society seem genuinely content with their lives, its due more to their ignorance and their soma than true happiness. Throughout the novel, Brave New World, the unifying idea that truth and happiness cannot coexists is prevalent; in order to achieve one, the other must be sacrificed. SCHOLARLY ARTICLE A critical look into the eyes of a critic can give in-depth analysis on a topic for which a reader might overlook. An article in Aldous Huxleys web site gives a very comprehensive investigation on Brave New World that breaks down and guesstimates the purpose of soma and its functionality. As the critic states, Huxley was writing a satirical piece of fiction, not scientific prophecy. Soma, viewed from scientific reality could be possible, but mostly have dangerous side effects and most unlikely to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It is something akin to drugs or alcohol, without the unfavorable side-effects. However, according to the article, taken in excess, soma acts as a respiratory depressant making more of an opiate than a sort of clinically valuable mood-brightener. It is what separates false happiness from the harsh realities the infantile people of Huxleys dystopia are not accustomed to. The basis of the government depicted in Brave New World is centered around control and manipulation, making soma a very useful tool in silencing rebellious thoughts by placating the minds of the public. On the other hand, those who do not find happiness are exiled into secluded islands where they cannot disrupt or infect the minds of others. This in itself gives proof that soma is not all effective to all populations, all the time. People like Bernard, though feels the instant gratification that soma brings, finds he cannot keep it as others could. The article gives a very insightful look into the mystery drug and debunks any misconception that could arise from lack of understanding within the novel. STYLE THEME The weapon of choice for the World Controllers is not nuclear bombs nor weaponry, but an artificial drug, soma. Instilling fear and intimidation could only go so far and may cause resentment and dangerous thoughts of rebellion in the oppressed. However, subconscious conditioning and mind-altering drugs could produce the same effects, without the dangerous thoughts. In addition to genetic engineering, the soma drug is perhaps the most powerful weapon the World Controllers have in their arsenal. With these two, any problems before Ford have been permanently eradicated from the minds of the everyday people. In the name of stability and happiness, as Mustapha Mond, one of Huxleys World Controllers states, the freedom of truth is sacrificed (Huxley, 225). Almost all of Huxleys characters, with the exception of the main protagonists Bernard and John, are content with having their soma, vicariously living through feelies, and living their mundane and ignorant lives never wanting more than what is given to them. Mond erroneously associates the lack of pain with genuine happiness. It seems only John the Savage understands that true joy is a result of knowing ones own self-worth and finding inner-satisfaction. John was filled with an intense, absorbing happiness after investing hard work into a clay sculpture he made with his own hands (Huxley, 134). He alone out of everyone else in civilized Britain could give testimony to feeling true happiness, and not the artificial one induced by the soma drug, because he is the only one who worked hard because he wanted to, and not because he was condit ioned to do so. POEM The concept of a futuristic dystopian society is popular through many works of prose. For example, Philena Pughs poem Fragments for the Gates of Times Square: the Fear of Neon, deals with a character who perceives himself to be the last of his kind. This mirrors Huxleys own character, John as well as drawing other parallels. Silence lies underneath the crackle and hum of the neon lights. The puddle near my feet glistens crimson reflecting the words Restaurant and Lounge. A tribute to our pick up/take out society. Above buildings crowd out the sky leaving a jailcell window  to see the stars through. My footsteps echo throughout the world and I realize that I am the last. My breathing grows labored- sending out a sharp, rasping sound to compete with the sputter-buzz conversation on the neon. My dim, twilight eyes srift shut and my final breath gurgles the dark phlegm of fear  in the back of my throat. With the hollow thump  of cranium meeting pavement, humanity is gone. And the neon lights burn brightly into eternity- crackling in time  to the winking stars. The narrator of Pughs poem and Huxleys John find themselves the last of their kind, with the narrator the last human, while John is the only one naturally conceived with civilized parents. They both find great tragedy in the world around them, feeling trapped and alone by what society becomes in their respective worlds. The two works of prose focuses on the struggle between man and the society he is a part of and their failure to adapt or to conform leads to their demise. Driven to madness by the horror of moral-less society around him, John cried out to God and covered his eyes with his hands (Huxley, 259), drawing parallelism, the narrator of the poem is met with the same fate with the hollow thump of cranium meeting pavement, humanity is gone(Pugh). The setting of both works is in a dystopia that puts an emphasis on the consumption of goods verses the freedom of nature. Juxtaposing Pughs society in which buildings crowd out the sky leaving a jailcell window to see the stars with t he buildings themselves are made as a tribute to [their] pick up/take out society, and Huxleys World-Controlled civilized society condition the masses to hate the country but at the same time, condition them to love country sports; one can see the similarities between the two dystopian societies. (Huxley, 23). These works built a society that ensures the consumption of goods and/or transportation and the technology that drives it.

Gummo: A Review :: essays research papers

Gummo: A Review   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Pieces of a puzzle slowly fitting together, to reveal a picture. This is an accurate description of how the film, Gummo by Harmony Korine pans out. Through a series of quite disturbing yet visually stimulating vignettes, Korine somehow relays a tragic story. Essentially, the film is a collection of random events that are assimilated into a larger scheme of things. For the most part, the film emphasizes on showing us things that we know are very real and actually happen, but are terribly hard for the average person to confront.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The tone is unveiled from the very beginning, while a dim and dark outlook are forecast. As it is set in the dilapidated, small town of Xenia, Ohio, the severity of the living conditions there is visible from start to finish. A few of the senseless, haphazard events that are captured, consist of - countless, brutal feline slayings, teens euthanizing the helpless, bed-ridden elderly, and drunken, redneck furniture wrestling. Somehow, in a twisted pattern, these scenes converge to depict the pure horror of living in this place.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In respect to the cast of this film, Chloe Sevigny is reasonably the only name that people are likely to recognize. There are a handful of other obscure actors as well as some non-actors that appear in the film, for various reasons. In the process of being introduced to each person through certain circumstances, it is difficult to determine which ones are the actors and which are not. From some of the sequences presented, it seems tough to draw the line between harsh reality and exploitation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Contrary to the town that this film takes place in (Xenia, Ohio), it was shot on location in Nashville, Tennesee. Nashville provides an appropriate backdrop for the setting that was trying to be portrayed. Korine shoots the film with raw textures, giving it a real, almost too real deliverance. The camera work at times is almost hard to watch. Throughout the film - the images have a natural, gritty appearance.

Life or Death? - Original Writing That is the Question -------------------- â€Å"What you say we treat ourselves to a wild night out, honey?† â€Å"At this time it’s only 9 o’clock.† â€Å"Yeah, I mean later on, say 10 o’clock.† â€Å"Yeah sure, why not, at least that way I can show you what I’m made of.† â€Å"Alright, yeah sure.† â€Å"You go and get ready knowing beautiful girls like you take years to get ready.† â€Å"Shhhhh.† Hannah hurries off to get ready with her body full of energy and excitement, while her fiancà © Ed has a feeling of fear going through his nerves and tries to sit down and relieve this fear. Ed thought of something his closest friend used to ask him when he was a young boy. â€Å"What is your deepest fear Ed?† Ed was very young and he never had a chance to answer his questions as his inner self was perplexed with different thoughts, but none of these thoughts could group together to give him an answer of what his deepest fear really was and it was too late for him to gather an answer before his friend had passed away. Still today Ed still has nerve shocks where his conscience asks him what his deepest fear was and what is it today. â€Å"Why can’t I figure the answer out?† he asks himself. â€Å"What is my deepest fear?† â€Å"Wait, I think I got it?† â€Å"Ed, are you speaking to yourself.† Hannah bellows from the bathroom. â€Å"No, honey I’m just singing that song me and you adore.† He replied embarrassedly. â€Å"I’m ready, Ed, what do you think?† â€Å"Honestly, do really want my opinion.† â€Å"Yessss, hurry.† â€Å"You look stunning sweetheart.† â€Å"Really, thanks.† â€Å"Wait, I’ve been waiting to say this to you Hannah, I want to say, that I love you.† â€Å"Awwww, I love you too,† mutters Hannah Hannah never really used believe Ed, but she didn’t want Ed to feel that his heart didn’t mean anything to Hannah.

Henry V Shakespeare Essay

In Henry V Shakespeare has used language to communicate the setting and the mood. I will also be contrasting between the scenes and characters. I will be doing this by looking at Act 3, Act 4 and using Act 2 Scene 1 and Act 1 Scene 2 to compare scenes and characters. Shakespeare used language in Henry V to communicate the setting. In ‘Act 3,’ the chorus tells the reader that the English army are sailing to France. The main role of the chorus was to explain things to the audience that could not be acted out on stage, to tell the audience that time has passed and to summarise parts of the play. The chorus also tells the reader or audience that once they reach France they begin to besiege the town of Harfleur. The reason why the chorus tells the reader or audience this is because this scene cannot be acted out on stage but Shakespeare uses language to get the audience to picture the ships crossing and the siege. In Shakespearian time it was necessary to have a chorus in this play because the chorus gets the audience to picture the ships crossing and the siege by telling the audience to use their imaginations. This is due to the fact that this scene cannot be acted out on stage and limited resources because in Shakespearian times there weren’t any effects they just had a stage and a few props. ‘Thus with imagin’d wing our swift scene flies,’ this sentence is telling the reader to use his or her imagination to imagine the setting and locality of this act. The chorus appeals to two senses. These two senses help the reader to build a picture in our imaginations of what it was like to be at the siege. The two senses are the sense of sight and the sense of hearing. An example of the sense of sight is, ‘hempen tackle ship-boys climbing,’ this creates an image in our heads of boys climbing. An example of the sense of hearing is, ‘hear the shrill whistle,’ this creates a sound in our heads of a sharp, high-pitched whistle. Shakespeare cleverly uses both senses in the same phrase. This is a more effective way of using language to communicate the setting because it creates a picture in our heads as well as creates sounds to the picture, ‘To sounds confus’d,’ this tells the reader that there are confusing sounds and where there are confusing sounds there are people which gives the emphasis that there are a lot of things going on and that there is a lot of mayhem. This gives the reader the picture in our heads that there are people running around. Another example is, ‘Behold the threaden sails Borne with the invisible and creeping wind’; in this phrase you can hear the creeping wind against the sails and you can visualize the sails moving. The effect of these senses is to help our imaginations paint a picture and it also helps the reader to understand what it was like to be in certain people’s shoes at the time of the crossing and the siege. If the reader were a ‘hempen tackle ship-boy’ then he or she would be ‘climbing,’ and if the reader was on the ship he or she will be hearing confused sounds. Now I am going to explain how language in Henry V is used to communicate the mood. In ‘Act 4’ the chorus describes to the reader the scene of the English camp the night before the battle of Agincourt. Shakespeare uses language to get the audience to feel the mood of the battlefield. Sound, words that emphasise ugliness, supernatural images and words that tell the reader that time is passing slowly are all ways to get the audience to feel the mood of the battlefield. ‘Creeping murmur,’ ‘hum of either army stilly sounds’ and ‘secret whispers,’ tells the reader about the sound of the camp and makes the reader feel slightly threatened and uneasy because it gives the feeling of impending danger. ‘Cripple tardy-gaited,’ ‘foul and ugly witch’ and ‘horrid ghosts,’ are words that emphasise ugliness. Those words make the reader not want to go there and they tell him or her that the place is disgusting, revolting and that it is an unpleasant place to be. ‘Ghosts’ and ‘witches’ are supernatural images. These images may make the reader feel scared and make him or her feel the same as the people in the camp. There are words and phrases that tell the reader time is passing slowly. These words and phrases are, ‘creeping,’ ‘cocks do crow, the clocks do toll,’ ‘ third hour of drowsy morning name,’ and ‘piercing. ‘ The effect that these words have on this scene is that it seems that this scene is time dragging. The reason why I say this is because the armies want the battle to be over but they also don’t want the battle to come. It is a bit like exams, because everyone doesn’t want the exam to come but when the exam comes they want to finish the exam and get it over and done with. Words which tells the reader about the sounds about the camp, words which emphasise ugliness, supernatural images and words they tell the reader time is passing slowly creates a weird and spooky mood in this scene. It is important that this kind of mood is created so that the reader can feel what it is like to be in the camp.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines Essay

The focus of my thesis is about the â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines† Campaign Slogan. I will discuss to you about why is it more fun in the Philippines. There are already several tourists who proclaims that it is more fun here in the Philippines. Have you been wondering why? Well maybe you’re wondering why because you haven’t been here. Well, to answer all your questions, I will state some facts here in my paper about why is it More Fun in the Philippines. I sincerely hope that you’ll enjoy reading this and hopefully, i will be able to satisfy your curiosity. First, There are so many beautiful places here in the Philippines like Luneta Park, Burnham Park, Puerto Prinsesa, Boracay, and etc. You will really enjoy viewing the scenery. I assure you that you will really appreciate everything that you will see here. Second, Filipinos are known as cheerful people. We Filipinos love to smile and laugh. Even though we are burdened by problems, you wouldn’t notice it for we always laugh like we don’t have a care in the world. We are also known as hospitable and friendly. Whether you’re a tourist or a fellow Filipino, we’ll surely welcome you warmly here in the Philippines. Third, we Filipinos are also known for our delicacies. Personally, not being able to taste food here in the Philippines, would be like missing a big part in my life. You must be thinking that i’m exaggerating, but i assure you, once you taste our food here, you’ll regret everything you thought. Lastly, We are also known for â€Å"Bayanihan†. We always help those who are in need. For example, there’s a calamity here in the Philippines. Filipino’s would surely find a way to help each other. Even though we have problems ourselves, we’ll always find a way to help those in need. With that, I can conclude that It is More Fun in the Philippines. Background of the Study This study aimed to document the production of the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) new international tourism campaign tagline â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines† and to explore the factors behind the Agency’s decision to tap the Social Media as its primary vehicle in promoting Philippine tourism through the new campaign slogan. The study likewise assessed the effectiveness of the new media strategy in reaching its target market – foreign tourists. Open-ended interview guides were used in securing information from DOT and the Ad Firm responsible for the development of the new tourism campaign. A one-page structured-survey questionnaire was used particularly in generating feedback from foreign tourists on their awareness and perception of the new tourism promotion tagline â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines.† A narration of the circumstances and process in the production of the new tourism campaign was made, together with an enumeration of the primary reasons behind the choice of the social media as the platform and channel in waging the new tourism campaign. The survey results showed that the Internet ranks Number 1 as a source of information on general matters and is a close second to friends, relatives and co-workers as the source of information that influenced the decision of foreign tourists to come to the Philippines. Quizzed and presented the current and the four other past tourism campaign taglines to determine their awareness of the present campaign, 47% of the foreign respondents accurately identified â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines† as the current tagline. The respondents likewise rated the current tourism tagline as â€Å"highly acceptable† on its appeal, capacity to attract interest, reasonableness, realism, recall facility, and its capacity to be understood. Finally, the use of the Internet social media as the launching pad and channel for the campaign may be considered effective on the grounds that about 50% of the foreign respondents were aware of the new campaign slogan, and that 33% got their information from the Internet. The reach of the campaign in a very short period was already very encouraging. It is recommended that the DOT extend or make its own survey if only to determine the number of foreign tourists who are attracted to come to the Philippines on account of the new tourism tagline â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines.† There is also a need to customize a language translation service in the DOT website to make the campaign more virally far reaching. Statement of the Problem 1. Do you think that a tourism campaign slogan plays an important role in attracting foreigners? 2. Do you agree with our campaign slogan â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines†? 3. Do you think the DOT campaign slogan â€Å"It’s more fun in the Philippines!† is effective in terms of the tourism arrivals in the country? 4. Do you think that our recent tourism campaign slogan should remain the same or should it be changed? Significance of the Study To give information of how the â€Å" It’s More Fun in the Philippines† slogan was created or invented. To broaden the knowledge of the people about the new slogan campaign of the Department of Tourism. To know if the new slogan campaign is effective or not the tourism of the Philippines. To know what are the problems encountered by the Department of Tourism regarding their new slogan campaign. To help the Department of Tourism on how they can promote and improve more their campaign to have a higher number of tourism arrivals. Scope and Limitations of the Study DOT launched again a new slogan. A line that would be easily understood. â€Å"It’s More Fun in the Philippines† is the same as â€Å"It’s More Fun in Switzerland†. According to Rome (2012) in her article in The Inquirer, the new tourism slogan of the Philippines is gaining more positive reactions from Filipinos since January when the slogan was released. The Department of Tourism said it spent P63 Million to buy good exposure for the campaign’s television advertisement on CNN, that has been aired in Asia, Europe and the United States. â€Å"It’s More Fun in the Philippines† has also launched at the International Travel Bourse in Berlin, which was attended by thousands of travel buyers. The campaign had already made a long way from its social media success where different versions of the slogan were posted in the internet. There are some airplanes that promote the â€Å"It’s More Fun in the Philippines† campaign by painting the said slogan on the exterior of the plane. Half-Filipino American Idol Season II runner-up Jessica Sanchez is now the newest model of the poster of the Department of Tourism’s vast campaign. According to Department of Tourism (2012), since the campaign of â€Å"It’s More Fun in the Philippines† was launched in January, the Department of Tourism stayed positive because of the effects that the slogan gave. According to Secretary Jimenez, There are currently policy reforms to facilitate the entry of the foreign tourists, infrastructure developments to improve the travel areas within the country, investments for expanding and improving the transportation, recreation facilities and accommodations that will help the Department of Tourism meet the year-end target. According to IPSOS Philippines, the slogan is â€Å"communicating its intended messaging that is making each Filipino proud and tell how beautiful the Philippines is, making people want to travel more and visit different tourist spots around the country, and making people believe and see that it is truly more fun in the Philippines. Visitor arrivals to the Philippines stroked the target of an all-time high of 1,148,072 during the first three months of the year, posting an increase of 16.03 percent compared to last year’s arrivals of 989,501 for the same period. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Department of Tourism (DOT) undersecretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. has announced the good news that 2.14 million foreign travellers visited the country from January to June this year. The figure was 11.68 percent higher compared to the same period in 2011. The local tourism industry targets 4.6 million tourists by the end of the year.

America Needs Its Nerds Essay

In the passage from â€Å"America Needs Its Nerds†, author Leonid Fridman dissect his argument by comparing and contrasting America’s on-going social beliefs and perceptions of the geek and the actual positive role taken on by the nerd and why the role that they play is so vital to our society. Friedman begins with, bringing to our attention, the type of terms our society uses to describe the â€Å"intellectually curious and academically serious. These types of derogatory terms aid in displaying Fridmans view point on the subject as he believes that the `use of these words to describe nerd and geeks are in fact an issue. Fridman uses diction that disgraces our society who casts out nerds because of their â€Å"intelligence and refusal to conform to societies anti-intellectual values. † Friedman applies the term ‘ostracized’ as a later follow up to the previous description of how it is common for the child who’d rather study or read books is looked down upon versus athletes who are falsely praised. In his essay, Friedman gives us insight on the negative connotation of the nerd and the failure to criticize the ones deserving of it. After this accumulation reaches a climax, Fridman establishes a turning point in his argument, utilizing one short and very straightforward sentence to display how exhausted he has become with the stereotype that the studious person is automatically given. Here, he begins to shift his tone from bitter and disgusted to motivational and inspiring. He even weaves patriotism into his argument, seemingly stating that the nerd population has become a national disaster zone in need of immediate attention from each individual citizen. Immediately following however, he turns and attacks our nation by giving a comparison between the US and Asia, claiming that they, our â€Å"rivals,† are doing a much better job of appreciating their own intelligence. As Fridman closes, he begins to place his argument into his reader’s hands by asking multiple and repetitive rhetorical questions. By over-generalizing America’s â€Å"typical† parent, he again motivates his reader to set himself apart from the cruel and stereotypical (most likely athletic) crowd and begin appreciating the â€Å"nerd† for himself. In this passage, Fridman makes a noteworthy effort to revolutionize an obviously shallow American standard. With a large dose of his own biased bitterness, and possibly a dash of his own â€Å"nerdy† revenge, he creates the solid argument that â€Å"America needs its nerds. â€Å"

How to Become an Engineer

How to become an Engineer? Engineers use their imagination and analytical skills to invent, design, and build things that matter. They are team players with independent minds who turn ideas into reality. Many become licensed professional engineers (P. E. s) in order to better protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. By dreaming up creative and practical solutions, engineers are changing the world all the time. Engineering has been called the â€Å"invisible† or â€Å"stealth† profession.Everything around us and that we use every day has been engineered in some way, yet we may not see the engineers behind the scenes or know much about engineering. Engineering is not part of our grade school education. Many engineers whose work affects the public become licensed. The engineering field is as varied as engineers themselves. Engineers can design and build superstructures or delicate medical instruments. Engineers are exploring for energy and for new worlds in s pace. They are designing the environmental controls for an art museum or directing global sales of today’s hottest cars and computers.Who knows where the next great challenges will be? I know what your thinking how do you become an engineer or that this is interesting and you would like to apply. Here’s how u become an engineer: First and Foremost, you want to do decide if you have what it takes to be an engineer. To become a professional engineer, you must have a college degree in engineering. Most university programs are selective and quite competitive. Earning good grades in high school is imperative, as is getting a high SAT or ACT score. Second, you must contemplate what type of engineering interests you. While most programs tend to focus on general core classes the first and second year of enrollment, many require students to enroll in a specific program regardless. Seats in each program are generally limited. If you maintain a high GPA, you can usually transfer f rom one program to another within the engineering department if necessary. It is still important to put some thought into what type of engineering interests you before entering your program. Third, look for and apply to schools with strong engineering programs in the area(s) that interest you.Fourth step is to get good grades in all of your classes once you are enrolled in a program. The first and second years are usually the hardest. Many students are required to take an above-average number of credit hours, and classes are tough. Outside employment is generally discouraged. Focus on your studies as much as possible. Your hard work will be rewarded in the future. The fifth step is to obtain a co-op. Co-ops are usually offered the third, fourth and fifth years of engineering programs. Most co-ops are paid, some are not. They are usually very competitive, which is why receiving high grades in your course work is important. This is the best way to obtain valid, related work experience before entering the job market and it can lead to employment upon graduation. The sixth step is to seek the assistance of your school's Career Development Center as you near the completion of your program. Someone there can usually help you with your resume, direct you to co-ops and internships and eventually help you apply for jobs in the engineering industry once you are qualified. The seventh and final step is to join a professional engineering society or association that caters to your specific interest. Professional organizations offer many networking opportunities that are ideal for those looking for employment as well as further professional development. Choosing the right career can mean the difference between being satisfied and being disappointed with my life. Many factors can influence the career that I may have for the rest of my life.A decision that I am going to make at the young age of nineteen will have a major impact on the next ten years of my life. In order to make the best decision possible for my future I must follow these steps inserted above. Now, all of this may sound hard and boring but if you interested like I am you would do whatever it takes to reach your goal in life. Engineers are one of the highest paid jobs and also the most complex. If you want to become an engineer follow these steps and you will be on your way to the best engineer possible
